Weekend Reflection: As Dawn Breaks

Dawn encroaches on the turf
so recently claimed by darkness,
bringing soft blues, hints of spun-sugar pink,
layers of blue-gray clouds that will meander
through before allowing the sun full reign.

Most of the city still sleeps.

Street lamps are still lit
and bounce their light off the placid waters
of the canal. Grand old buildings
admire their reflection another day.

A few watercraft chug along, bringing supplies.
The vaporettos chuff into the Rialto stops, largely empty.

The narrow passageways and piazzas
belong to carriers of cameras and tripods
for a few minutes more,
before shopkeepers appear with buckets of water
and brooms to make ready for business.

This musn't have been an easy picture to take... I like this moment of the day, that in French we call : "l'heure entre chien et loup" (the hour between dog and wolf : it means it is the bad moment of the daylight, where you can't tell if the animal you are staring at is a dog or a wolf). The composition on your picture is admirable too.

I enlarged the photo to get a better perspective, and am thoroughly glad that I did! This is a wonderful shot, full of anticipation and a little moodiness that's very hard to capture!
