Theme Thursday: Book

Theme Thursday's topic this week is BOOK.


There's a topic that's dear to my heart.



All you true book lovers out there,
I have a question.

Have you transitioned to virtual books?

How could you possibly give up the smell of ink,
the feel of the velvety pages,
the sound of the pages turning,
the heft of the book in your hands,
the knowing that your favorite passage
was about 2/3 of the way through the book
on the right-hand side, second paragraph
from the bottom?

Is reading the same sensual pleasure?

I love the feel of a book in my hand. Hubby has converted, or is in the process and he spends hours with his head in the Nook. I, on the other hand, have a love affair with books and just have no inclination to switch.

Several family members already have converted and they love it. I don't. I don't think I will ever give up the feel of a book. Plus, there's nothing more pleasurable for me than to spend hours in a bookstores looking through all the shelves and seeing what's come in. And as the case, I never leave without a couple in my hand. Consequently, every nook and cranny in my home is filled with books and I love it. Love it. That's what brings me joy. Books. Real books.

I've not yet succumbed to a reader. Got an I-Pad for the holidays and had The good Husband return it. No interest. However, as my arthritic hands continue to deteriorate, I think I will ultimately acquiesce.

I never thought I could love an e-reader. Then I received one for a holiday. I actually love both paper books and the e-reader. They serve different purposes.

Plus, I tend to travel a lot. I used to load as many as 10 books into my backpack and waltz on a plane. Very heavy. Now I can have those ten and ten more to carry (and have many of actual books back at the house).

The e-reader is great if I want to read a current bestseller or a quick paperback. For "serious" books or something that matters more, it's a real book all the way.

I love them both, and love having the best of both worlds. the books I have I'll keep but I don't want any more. it's like taking on more baggage in my life when I'm trying to lighten my load. if I get a new book one has to go. and I can get a greater number of new books with my Kindle because they take up no space on my bookshelf!

Both have their advantages and disadvantages so a happy blend of both , traditional and modern ways of reading I suppose!!

I can not imagine replacing that sensual pleasure with a virtual screen, it's just not the same for me...thanks for renewing my devotion to the good old-fashioned book :)

I didn't think I would ever consider making the switch...until I vacationed recently. I was envious of my fellow travelers who had a nice, compact eReader of one sort or another...with probably multiple books loaded. And I...I had to choose which book to bring along on my trip...and I had wished I had chosen the other book! lol So, perhaps I will consider and eReader one day after all! ~Paula

I have an e-reader, and love it for the ease of tossing it into my purse and having tons of books at my disposal. But I will never stop loving the real thing. Nothing compares to digging through the stacks in the used bookstore, or revisiting a well-loved copy of a favorite. :)

Nice take on the theme! I love to see how people weigh in on this subject. :)

On a rainy night such is this, I peruse the bookshelfs picking out a well worn book for a reread. I will honestly say, never! will I use a medium other than a book with paper pages I can turn with my own hands. Timely post Meri, and I enjoyed it.

My grandfather, whose childhood years were spent in Wallowa County, Oregon, recalled that when he was a child, he used to see members of the Nez Percé tribe in the area, their summer hunting grounds. You may or may not know that the Nez Percé   had been granted reservation lands in 1855  by the Washington Territory's  territorial governor, Isaac Stevens.  The land reserved for the tribe encompassed  their traditional hunting lands,  including the Wallowa Valley.  But as settlement by whites continued and gold was found,  the incentive to honor that treaty diminished. Sepia Saturday: Letsinger Brothers of Putnam County

Library of Congress, Prints & Photographs Division, Liljenquist Family Collection LC-DIG- ppmsca-27248 ] This portrait shows brothers William and Phillip J. Letsinger of Company D, 14th Indiana Regiment, posing with rifles in front of Camp Michigan painted backdrop. They enlisted together on June 7, 1861 while living in Putnam County, Indiana. They both were inducted at the rank of private. William was discharged as a private on October 29, 1862.  His brother Phillip, who had been promoted to Corporal, was one of 3252 men killed at Antietam on September 17, 1862. Antietam,  also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, was the first Civil War battle fought on northern territory.  Sepia Saturday.
