Favorite Photo Friday: Portrait

My favorite photo  taken this week is this portrait
of a young man who'll be a freshman in high school this fall.
He's at that age when sometimes he's an angel
and sometimes, well. . . .

In other words,
your typical teen.

This was taken with a Nikon D5000,
ambient light in a dim parking garage
on auto ISO (1600)
70 mm focal length
aperture at f/11
exposure time 1/50th of a second
white balance set for shade.

If I were doing it again,
I'd set the ISO at 200
and then alter my settings
and shoot at about 1/20th of a second
in ambient light
so the photos weren't so grainy,
but I actually had forgotten
that I had set the camera on auto ISO.

I'll have a chance to reshoot on Monday
when I take portraits of his older brother.
I just hope that graffiti artists
don't paint over this great background by then.

Or maybe, just maybe, you'd like to play along.

I'm also posting a
"Best Posts of the Week" entry
but it's one from my other blog.

Meri - thanks for playing along with Favorite Photo Friday! It's great to have you join us.
I love your shot - but then as a mom of three sons - and my youngest going to be a freshman in high school this fall- I have a tender spot in my heart for that age group!

An interesting background to be sure! But I love the colors - even the pinks on the wall coincide with the red hat.

I didn't notice any grainy-ness in the shot, but I know even when I am at ISO 800 I get grainy-ness when I try to make enlargements.

I don't have a lot of experience with subtle changes in the settings but am glad you mentioned those things - that is the kind of stuff I want to learn and get better at.

Love the smile! It goes right to his eyes.

That's an awesome shot and he's such a great looking young man! Like Valerie, I too see no graininess--just a very cool photo!
I love this shot...and your other photos, too!

LOVE this background. I have two little boys at home, but used to coach high school boy's sports and this is so fitting for this age group. What a great picture, hope it was still there when you went back.

Bripolo12 - couldn't email you directly so this will have to do. I agree with you -- graffiti backdrops are great for teen portraits. Makes them feel slightly outlaw, plus they're very colorful backdrops. Unfortunately, the big brother decided his hair wasn't long enough for the senior portraits, so I'm sure that when he's ready, there will be a whole new array of designs.
